The incident occurred in Rojmal village in Gadhda taluka of Botad. The leopard had ventured into the village and is believed to have preyed on a domestic animal. The forest department has launched a probe after an adult leopard was allegedly beaten to death by villagers in Botad village on Friday evening. Scared that the wild animal will attack their children, scores of villagers went after the wild cat and rounded it up outside the village. They allegedly thrashed it with sharp-edged weapons, sticks and iron rods. The distressed leopard tried to escape but could not do so. Meanwhile, some villagers informed the forest department and a rescue team from Mahuva rushed to Rojmal. The leopard was brought to Animal Care Centre in Ranigala in the Mahuva forest range. However, the animal died during treatment on Friday evening, forest officials said.
According to village sources, the leopard was spotted in Rojmal on Friday and had reportedly preyed on domestic cattle. A video of the incident went viral on social media where the villagers are seen thrashing the leopard with sticks and rods. Forest officials said that a complaint will be lodged under the Wildlife Protection Act against the people who are seen beating the leopard.
